
Bio

Chirag received his PhD from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2017. Prior to this, he graduated as an architect from the National Institute of Technology Tiruchirapalli with an institute gold medal and ‘best outgoing student’ award. He then pursued the M.S. (by research) degree in Building Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras. Chirag was awarded the prestigious President’s Graduate Fellowship for his PhD.
Chirag worked as a postdoc researcher at the Chair of Architecture and Building Systems in ETH Zurich, Switzerland between 2017 and 2021 and oversaw a range of projects pertaining to energy in buildings and well-being of the occupants. He also represented ETH Zurich and Switzerland in one of the International Energy Agency’s Energy in Buildings and Communities project. Chirag broadly works in the field of energy in buildings and cities, and specifically on data-driven energy modeling.
He is an editorial board member of the Frontiers in Built Environment journal and has authored several papers in high-impact journals. One of his papers is featured in the top 1% of all cited papers in engineering as per the Web of Science.
Since October 2021 he is an assistant professor in the Centre for Urban Science & Engineering (CUSE) at IIT Bombay and the Principal Investigator of the Data & Energy in Buildings & Cities laboratory (DebCLab). He also serves as the coordinator for the Master of Technology in Urban Systems programme at CUSE, IIT Bombay.
